Argyle’s first pre-season match of the summer against Elburton Villa highlighted the success of the Home Park youth system.

Of the 19 players who took part in that first friendly game 11 came through the youth set-up at Argyle.
The first half starting line-up contained seven Argyle trainees.
Youngsters Isaac Vassell, River Allen, Luke Young, Ben Purrington, Matt Lecointe and Tyler Harvey all started against Elburton while Argyle legend Paul Wotton also played a part.

The second half team against Elburton had another four players who started their career at Argyle. Returning trainees Reuben Reid and Luke McCormick were part of the line-up while young defenders Curtis Nelson and Jamie Richards played in central defence.

Injured trialist Ryan Dickson is another player who has come through the youth system at Argyle, in effect Argyle could field a team plus one substitute of players who started their career at Home Park.
The current crop of youngsters Vassell, Allen, Young, Purrington, Lecointe, Harvey, Nelson and Richards would be supplemented by trainees who have returned to the club for a second spell like the more experienced Wotton, McCormick, Reid and Dickson.

There can’t be many League Two teams who can put out a team of players that have made it through the youth system at various stages.
