It’s official – Summer is over! Pre-season training for the Plymouth Argyle squad begins tomorrow!

Five and a half weeks before the season curtain raiser at Peterborough United the Argyle squad return to Home Park on Wednesday 28 June to begin their gruelling pre-season training programme, a regime that should hold them in good stead throughout the season.

The new players will meet the rest of the squad for the first time; manager Derek Adams recently made five new signings and currently has 16 players in his squad plus six youngsters who have just signed their first professional contract, so Adams will be busy signing new players over the next few weeks.

It’s also a chance for the players to swap summer holiday stories, compare tans and reacquaint themselves with that white round bouncy thing.

The first day of term is often a casual affair with the players getting weighed and their fitness levels checked to find out how many burgers and beers were consumed since the end of last season.
The stamina sapping 10-mile cross-country runs are usually reserved for the second week of pre-season training; however Adams has a reputation as a hard taskmaster in training and is sure to stamp his mark early doors.
Harper’s Park training ground was upgraded over the summer and that doesn’t just mean the dog mess was cleared up! New drainage, fencing and a water tower have been fitted as part of some substantial investment.

Pre-season training is also a chance for fans to play the annual ‘spot the trialist’ game, a traditional summer pastime where Argyle supporters impress their friends with knowledge of obscure lower league players and to confuse matters even more trialists from foreign shores often appear on the training ground around this time of year.

Grimsby Town doesn’t seem that long ago!
