Plymouth Argyle – Any Number Of Headlines

Which superlatives to use?

Any number of headlines could be and probably have been written about Saturday at Home Park:

– Early Christmas present for Argyle fans
– Argyle get into the festive spirit
– Green Santas bring presents for Plymouth fans
– Argyle rampant just before Christmas
– Argyle provide the perfect Christmas Saturday
– Argyle make sprouts of the opposition

But none of them would fully convey the polished and technically effective performance by the men in green and white in front of a ten thousand crowd against Oldham Athletic. Every Argyle player did their job brilliantly and the opposition found it difficult to compete with such mastery of the beautiful game. Am I going a bit over the top here? Not really, as it was a joy to watch on this classic Plymouth afternoon of damp and drizzle. As a result Argyle are now out of the relegation zone in League 1 which is probably the best present of all.

Looking at the individuals:

Roos gave a competent display in goal and his kicking and throw outs were excellent. He also made a great save in the second half.
Sawyer and Threlkeld played the perfect full back roles, defending well yet also adding to the attacking impetus.

The two centre backs were titanic with the added bonus of a goal from Edwards, whilst Songo`o was rock solid in front of them.
Diagouraga was exceptional (please hang on to him in January); very difficult to beat, causing all sorts of dilemmas for Oldham`s defenders and scoring a sublime goal.

Fox added a velvety touch in midfield, distributing the ball like a well oiled tennis ball machine to all parts of the arena.
Derek Adams played a masterstroke by putting tricky and skilful Carey( scored a lovely lob of a goal) and Lameiras( please also keep him), who has a great touch, at the outer edges while also allowing them plenty of freedom to be creative. (Could Theresa May now abandon ‘strong and stable` for ‘tricky and skillful,` repeating it ad infinitum as she does?)

Then we come to the guy that perhaps made the most significant contribution of all to the 4-1 victory; Taylor who was just fantastic with his incredible ability to hold up the ball while besieged by big defenders; but it was also the fact that after winning the ball he was, time after time, able to get it to one of his colleagues.

Jervis, Grant and Sangster were the subs who came on and it`s worth mentioning that Jervis scored from his first touch of the ball.

For me, this was the best performance of the season so far.
Finally, you have to praise the crowd for really getting behind our team and also the Oldham supporters who made a long journey, at a time of year when the roads are pretty awful, to support their team and who made plenty of noise throughout the match.
