Well Said Fletch

Plymouth Argyle manager Carl Fletcher has called on the Green Army to get behind the team and not criticise the players during games.

Speaking to BBC Radio Devon after last night’s 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers at Home Park, Fletcher said: ‘I’m a little bit disappointed with the way the fans got on some of the lads backs straight away.
‘They’re all young lads and nobody’s perfect, it was a case of it’s easy to sit there and have a moan at players.
‘I’ve got Youngy and Conor there, they’re 19 and 21 in midfield and Matty’s only 17, they need encouragement not people getting on their backs.
‘But they saw it through and they kept trying to do the right things.’

There was a definite sinister undercurrent during the match against Rovers with sections of the Home Park crowd ready to turn on the players at any given opportunity. The slightest mistake or back pass was too easily greeted with moans and groans.

Once Hourihane put Argyle into the lead with a fantastic strike the fans got behind the team and you could see the whole team grow in confidence, only for the terrace moans and groans to return later in the game.

Last season while in administration there was a sense of ‘all in it together’ – a siege like mentality with the players receiving 100% support from the fans.

This season has been frustrating so far and it’s understandable that some fans are not happy with the way the results have gone so far but some fans are too ready to criticise as soon as the first whistle is blown. Booing and moaning doesn’t help anyone, especially the players.

After being in the middle of two relegations and gone through the turmoil of administration Fletcher will understand better than most the frustration felt by the fans; he will get it right on the pitch.
Let’s get back to last year when the players were supported and encouraged and see where it takes us.
