Argyle’s pre-season game against FC Emmen in the Netherlands has been called off.

Butterflies, bikes and a local Mayor have combined to thwart the Greens playing a game of football.

The friendly game at the JenS Vesting Stadium on Tuesday 25 July was today cancelled by Emmen Mayor Eric van Oosterhout because the local police force will be stretched that day coping with a butterfly market and a cycling race through Emmen.

Argyle officials hope to find an alternative venue, a spokesman said: ‘While we understand the mayor’s decision, we are disappointed to have to revise the detail of our visit to Holland at this late stage.
‘We are working with officials at FC Emmen, who share our disappointment, to see if an alternative venue or date can be accommodated.

‘We will keep supporters appraised of the situation as it develops.’
