How The New Players Rate

Argyle manager Derek Adams has so far made eight new signings during the summer transfer window; let’s see how they have rated during the early pre-season friendly games.

The Greens have played six pre-season games so far, ratings awarded from the four games I have seen.

Lionel Ainsworth arrived from Motherwell and his You Tube show reel where he jinks, turns, crosses and scores from long range had Argyle fans eagerly anticipating watching him play.
He hasn’t yet hit those dizzy heights and is yet to score in five games but he does look a goal threat.
Rating 6/10.

Big centre-back Ryan Edwards was voted Player of the Season at Morecambe and has carried that good form into Argyle’s pre-season games. For a big defender he is composed with the ball at his feet and able to pick a pass than even Graham Carey would be proud of. Edwards has played the most minutes of the eight new signings.
Rating 8/10.

Joel Grant signed from Exeter City and has hit the ground running, scoring three goals in five games from a wide position.
His movement and ability to find goal scoring positions should make him a first team regular.
Rating 7/10.

Ruben Lameiras (pictured above)has been the pick of the new signings. The midfielder from Coventry City brings creativity, trickery and a goal threat to the new team as highlighted by scoring four goals in five games; he is also surprisingly tough in the tackle with an excellent work ethic.
Rating 9/10.

Midfielder Jamie Ness arrived from Scunthorpe and has missed all six pre-season games because of injury.
Unrated.

Defender Aaron Taylor-Sinclair has missed the last two games because of injury; he is surprisingly tall for a left-back and can appear clumsy with the ball at his feet but so far has defended well and also got forward to provide some width.
Rating 6/10.

Dutch goalkeeper Robbert te Loeke will be back-up goalie to Luke McCormick and so far hasn’t impressed. He’s a good shot stopper but he is very quiet for a keeper and doesn’t organise his defence, can only improve once he settles into a new country.
Rating 5/10.

Gregg Wylde returned to Argyle after leaving to sign for Millwall last summer. His pace will always be an asset in any league; however there has been some criticism of his final pass or cross, too often a promising attacking move is halted by a wasted cross from Wylde sailing out of play.
It was noticeable that against Torquay United Wylde opted to fire in low crosses across the penalty area; this new tactic may have more success of the winger providing regular assists in League One.
