Is Argyle’s Left Side Convincing?

In recent years Argyle’s left sided positions have caused concern.

Last season, there was the likes of Tony Capaldi and Lee Hodges fighting it out for the vacant left sided midfield role. Then there was Gary Sawyer, who returned to the Argyle fold to take up the left side of defence, also a natural position for Capaldi.

January 2007 and Ian Holloway signs up left midfielder Peter Halmosi. First two or three games were unconvincing, but he managed to persuade Holloway, to select him instead of Capaldi to play in midfield position and Capaldi into defence.

But even their partnership was a cause for concern, as Capaldi became rather unhappy that not enough money was offered for him to stay another year or two and eventually left at the end of the last season a free agent.

But I feel ever since Capaldi has left the club, the left side field of playing positions has sparkled a bit, with Gary Sawyer and Halmosi knowing each other’s game and it seems as though the excitement on the left side, is where most of our possession and chances are created, and I for one am glad that Paul Sturrock has brought back the confidence and hunger for players in that position.

Another left sided player Sturrock has signed is Motherwell’s Jim Paterson. Twice in two games, Sturrock has played both Halmosi and Paterson on either side of the field. My opinion is that we have two exceptional left footed players. Not only can both play defensive, but can also play on the right hand side.

Again stats show, Halmosi vs Leicester, right midfield start, scores a goal. Paterson vs Southampton, right midfield start, scores a goal.

So what do you make of the left hand sided players we have in the squad? After years of complaining that Argyle were ‘rubbish’ and ‘had no quality,’ to put some fans views to the point, is it how far Plymouth have come to attract quality players, or is that the squad that has been assembled over the Championship, have grown to accept all players that come in are quality buys, and here to fulfil their dreams as of the fans and to be as passionate as the fans?

I am moist with anticipation at seeing Halmosi at left midfield and Stepover at left back. Jim is outstanding when played in other positions and I think other teams just could not cope with the quality if they were both attacking down the same flank.

Totally agree all the disappointment of the January sales has given way to optimism with the class signings Luggy’s made whilst leaving money in the bank

Sturrock has recently stated that a stable back four has really helped the team and they have conceded no goals in three games, so Sawyer will stay at left back. Paterson will have to wait to play there.
