Plymouth Argyle captain Darren Purse has been placed on the transfer list.

Local newspaper The Herald reports that financial reasons are behind the decision to sell the 35-year old centre-back.

Purse moved to Home Park on-loan from Millwall last season before making the deal permanent in January 2012. The experienced defender was instrumental in Argyle avoiding relegation from League Two.

This season manager Carl Fletcher made Purse captain but his performances haven’t quite matched last season’s fine displays although he has been playing through a series of injuries.

Purse only has another six months left on his contract so it’s doubtful if another club will pay a transfer fee so a loan move in January appears to be the best option.
It does seem crazy for Fletcher to place his most experienced player and captain on the transfer list with a crucial and busy month ahead, especially when you consider that the transfer window is closed and Purse cannot move anywhere until January.
This move is bound to unsettle players and fans at a pivotal time of the season.

With Purse having gained more coaching qualifications than Fletcher you would think the manager would welcome having that experience to call upon in yet another fight against relegation.

Strange times at Home Park.
