Plymouth were forced to call off a planned behind closed doors ‘unfriendly’ friendly against Portsmouth yesterday. With the international break it was hoped the match would take place Friday afternoon, but heavy rain put pay to the idea.

Pulis explained: ‘With the weather, we have got to be very careful of the pitch’. The groundsman was worried about the state of the pitch if they did play and the rain continued as forecast. Pulis added: ‘I’ve been at the club six weeks and I think it’s rained nearly every day. We’re disappointed, but we will go up to the training-ground and have a game amongst ourselves.’

The Pilgrims boss had planned to play three trial players in the match including Zambian international striker Christopher Katongo, French defender Gael Suares and an unnamed Frenchman. He said ‘We’re trying to open up every door that we can,’
