Plymouth Argyle look set to have a second offer for Exeter City striker Jamie Mackie rejected and could also miss out on Forest Green Rovers forward Stuart Fleetwood.

Argyle manager Paul Sturrock recently tabled a bid for Mackie, believed to be in total of £100,000, but the Blue Square Premier League side rejected that offer for the 14-goal striker.

The Pilgrims’ have since returned with another offer for the 21-year frontman, who will be out-of-contract in the summer, but look set to have that bid rejected as Exeter’s Director of Football Steve Perryman explains, he said ‘Plymouth have put in a second offer and it is not much very much more than the first one. We’re not excited about it. We haven’t turned it down yet. It’s on the table but that’s as far as it goes.’

Meanwhile, Argyle face competition to land Forest Green Rovers striker Stuart Fleetwood with Charlton Athletic and a number of League One clubs showing an interest.

Crewe Alexandra have had an offer of £175,000 rejected by the Blue Square Premier League who have made it clear they would not accept any bids below £200,000 for the striker who has scored 30 goals in 32 games this season.

Fleetwood’s agent Riley Taggart denies that Fleetwood is holding out for a dream move to Argyle or Charlton but would consider a transfer to League One, he said: ‘Stuart is not holding out for any particular club, and should he be given permission to talk to someone in League One he would certainly do that.’

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Sturrock is chasing Oldham Athletic defender Neil Trotman in a £500,000 transfer, as revealed by Plymouth Vital on Tuesday.
If the deal goes through it would break Argyle’s transfer record of £400,000 paid for Peter Halmosi last season.

I generally support the board but I have to say it seems we are being a bit tight in our hunt for strikers bearing in mind we have just gained £3m in transfer sales. All very well going for lower/non league young strikers in the hope that they turn into top players, but I would also like to see an experienced pro on his way down from the Premiership/top Championship club in the mould of Barry Hayles circa 2006. Surely we could afford a £1m or so to get proven quality, albeit of an older vintage!

On the PA website PS says he will not go for lesser players so why 3 bids for players lower than the championship, 2 of them are strikers from the conference. These are not promotion players.

I don’t mind us taking a gamble on these players occasionally but we don’t appear to be linked to any other more capable players atm and that worries me.
Drew Talbot looked ok in the liverpool v luton match but wonder how much they’d want for him anyway.

Macky and Fleetwood are both brill and will propel us 2 gr8ter things. Those dissing this will be in 4 a shock when they both sing.

    They’re pop stars??

    They’re popstars?
Like I say, not worried about being linked to them, just the cost involved for a non league player and the fact we don’t have anyone proven at this level (or higher) which is what we should be aiming for.

Personally I’d like to see who we sign then watch him play before making any judgement about players I know nothing about.

oh great we cant even sign conference strikers, just gets better and better

    Perhaps we should trust Luggy?
Kightly came from Gray’s to Wolves for just 20k, also his mate Maclean has done well, albeit at P’boro, so there are good players at conference level underachieving.
However, if they do turn out to be rubbish, I’ll keep quiet!

completely agree jockgreen, we need experience up front, and sure then we can take a gamble on potential. We must have money to spend and the club needs to put up now, play offs wont happen but a good mid table finish is feasable.
