Plymouth Argyle midfielder Simon Walton has joined Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan.

The 21-year old was signed by Argyle boss Paul Sturrock from Queens Park Rangers at the beginning of last season for a reported club record transfer fee of £750,000. However, the club later changed the details of the fee and revealed that the fee was payable in instalments.

Walton started last season in the Argyle team but eventually lost his place and appeared to have a falling out with Sturrock. The former Leeds United player then had a loan spell Blackpool but only made one substitute appearance.

Walton, who can also play at centre-back, was left out of Sturrock’s plans for the new 2009-2010 season and his future appeared to be away from Home Park.
Some fans believe that Walton wasn’t given a fair chance by Sturrock, although history will show that the purchase of Walton was a costly mistake by the Argyle manager.

Crewe will be Walton’s ninth club of his short career and he will wear the number 28 shirt for the League Two outfit.

Walton has displayed some good footballing qualities, but that is were it begins and ends. On loan, div 2 club and no real pressure; this should be his chance to prove himself and get back onto the big stage again. My advice to him is keep quiet, listen, learn and do the job he being paid for. Best of luck Simon and make it work this time!!!

A £750,000 switch to a Championship club to a loan move to League Two in just one year must surely be the biggest wake up call for a professional footballer.
